Build the knowledge to manage hazardous waste more confidently across your site or organisation. This practical course takes participants through the key steps—from identifying and classifying waste to segregation, storage, contractor checks and documentation.
It is designed for environmental, HSE, waste, transport, facilities, warehouse, compliance, laboratory and site managers, and others responsible for hazardous waste.
Course content
1. Hazardous-waste legislation
Explore the main legal responsibilities that apply when hazardous waste is produced, stored, transferred or managed. The course considers relevant differences across the UK.
2. Hazardous or non-hazardous?
Understand how to assess waste and why the classification needs to be accurate before it is sent for recovery or disposal.
3. EWC / List of Waste classification
Learn how European Waste Catalogue (EWC), also known as List of Waste (LoW), codes are used to describe waste and support its safe, lawful management.
4. Hazardous properties and POPs
Explore how hazardous properties are assessed and when persistent organic pollutants (POPs) controls may also apply.
5. Segregation and storage
Review how to keep waste streams separate, choose suitable containers, label them clearly and store waste safely while it is under your control.
6. Waste contractor due diligence
Understand the checks that help confirm waste is passed to authorised carriers and destinations, and consider the information to keep about your arrangements.
7. Consignment notes, duty of care and records
Work through hazardous-waste consignment notes and the responsibilities that apply when waste is transferred. The course also covers duty of care and record keeping.
8. Rejected loads
Learn why loads may be rejected and what to consider when responding, communicating with the relevant parties and keeping records.
9. Hazardous waste and ADR
Consider how waste classification relates to dangerous goods transport requirements. The course introduces ADR awareness and helps participants recognise when further transport advice may be needed.
10. Practical exercises
Apply the learning through practical waste-classification exercises and a documentation exercise based on hazardous-waste consignment paperwork.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to:
Practical training for day-to-day decisions
The course combines an overview of the requirements with practical exercises in classification and documentation. Participants can bring questions from their own operations and consider how the learning applies to their roles and workplace procedures.
The course provides training and awareness; it does not replace a site-specific assessment, a specialist waste classification or professional advice where these are needed.

Waste requirements vary across the UK. Classification and controls depend on the waste and the activities involved. See GOV.UK guidance on classifying waste, hazardous-waste consignment notes, and identifying and classifying waste containing POPs.
