A practical course for veterinary teams covering how to classify, segregate, store and document common waste streams. It considers the particular issues that can arise in animal healthcare, including animal tissues, medicines and waste that may be infectious or hazardous.
Suitable for veterinary practices, animal hospitals, laboratories, and staff or contractors who handle or oversee veterinary waste.
Course content
Veterinary waste streams
Explore anatomical and infectious waste, sharps, pharmaceutical waste, cytotoxic and cytostatic waste, chemical waste, and animal carcasses and tissues.
Classification and segregation
Review EWC/List of Waste classification and how the source and nature of waste affect its management. Practical examples help participants consider how different streams should be segregated and what additional requirements may apply to animal tissues or carcasses.
Storage and documentation
Consider suitable storage arrangements and the records needed to support waste handling and transfer.
Transport and ADR awareness
Understand how transport requirements may apply to some veterinary waste streams, and why classification, packaging and documentation should be considered before collection.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to recognise common veterinary waste streams, follow appropriate segregation and storage procedures, and identify when further advice or controls may be needed.
The course uses veterinary examples and should be aligned with local procedures and waste arrangements. Animal tissues and carcasses may also be subject to animal by-product requirements, depending on the circumstances.
