This specialist course focuses on the safe management of waste containing or contaminated by cytotoxic or cytostatic medicines. Participants review how to identify the waste, segregate it correctly and follow the appropriate procedures for containers, storage, handling and transport.
Suitable for oncology departments, hospitals, pharmacies, specialist clinics and healthcare waste contractors.
Course content
Identification
Understand what makes a medicine cytotoxic or cytostatic and how to recognise waste that may contain or be contaminated by these medicines.
Segregation and containers
Explore how to keep cytotoxic and cytostatic waste separate from other pharmaceutical and healthcare waste, and how to select suitable containers for the waste stream.
Labelling and storage
Review labelling and storage arrangements that help keep waste secure, identifiable and ready for collection in line with local procedures.
Safe handling and transport
Consider the precautions and procedures for handling and moving this waste, including the transport requirements that may apply.
Emergency procedures
Discuss how to respond to spills or contamination, including the importance of following workplace procedures, using the right equipment and involving trained personnel.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to recognise cytotoxic and cytostatic waste, follow local segregation and storage procedures, and understand the steps to take if waste is spilled or contaminated.
The course uses practical examples relevant to healthcare and waste operations. It supports local procedures and risk assessments rather than replacing them.
