Section II Lithium Batteries by Air: Adequate Instruction
Ship lithium batteries packed with or contained in equipment? Your staff need to know when a shipment qualifies for Section II and how to prepare it correctly. This practical Roadsafe Europe course provides adequate instruction for people who prepare or offer eligible lithium-battery shipments for transport by air.
The course focuses on the Section II requirements for lithium-ion batteries under IATA Packing Instructions 966 and 967, and lithium-metal batteries under 969 and 970. It is designed for shippers, packers and other staff whose duties involve preparing these shipments.
What you will learn
You will learn how to identify the battery and its shipping configuration, select the appropriate packing instruction, and check whether Section II applies. We then work through packaging, protection against short circuits and accidental activation, battery marks, overpacks and air-waybill information.
Practical examples let you make the decisions you would face at work: preparing a shipment, checking its marks and paperwork, and recognising when it must be referred for more extensive dangerous-goods handling. The course also covers current requirements, including the state-of-charge limit for certain lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment.
Who should attend?
This course is suitable for people preparing eligible lithium-ion or lithium-metal batteries packed with or contained in equipment for air transport. It is particularly useful for businesses shipping electronic products, tools, medical devices and other battery-powered equipment.
If you ship batteries on their own, larger batteries, or other battery shipments outside Section II, contact us and we will help you identify the appropriate training.
Course format and record of instruction
The course is available as live online training or as a private session for your team. Private training can be tailored to the products you ship and the procedures your staff follow.
Delegates complete practical exercises and a short knowledge check. They receive a record of instruction stating the Section II battery types and packing instructions covered. Employers should also ensure that staff can apply their own documented shipping procedures and keep a record of the instruction provided.
Roadsafe’s support continues after the course. Delegates can contact us for reasonable, course-related help and guidance for 12 months after their training.
