Dry ice is widely used to keep food, medical products, biological samples and other temperature-sensitive goods cold during transport. However, dry ice is classified as dangerous goods for air transport and must be packed, marked, labelled and documented correctly.
Our CAA-approved half-day course gives personnel the practical knowledge they need to prepare and offer dry-ice shipments safely and compliantly – for air, road and sea transport.
The course covers carbon dioxide, solid—commonly known as dry ice—assigned to UN 1845. It is suitable for both initial and revalidation training.
Who should attend?
This course was produced in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, and is ideally suited to everyone who prepares, packs, marks, labels or documents shipments containing dry ice, including staff working in:
Training should be appropriate to the functions each person performs. Employers remain responsible for ensuring that personnel are competent to carry out their assigned duties.

Course content
The course includes:
Initial and revalidation training
The same course is suitable for candidates receiving dry-ice training for the first time and those completing recurrent or revalidation training.
Revalidation training should be completed before the candidate’s existing qualification expires.
Assessment and certification
Candidates complete an assessment to demonstrate their understanding of the subjects covered.
Successful candidates receive a RoadSafe Europe training certificate valid for 24 months. The certificate is restricted to the preparation and consignment of dry ice and the other limited provisions expressly covered by the course.
Important course scope
This is a specialist, function-specific course. It is suitable for personnel shipping goods where dry ice is the only regulated dangerous commodity.
It does not qualify candidates to prepare shipments containing larger quantities of other Dangerous Goods or dangerous goods outside the scope of the course. Personnel undertaking those functions will require additional training.
Where dry ice is used with another regulated Dangerous Goods substance—such as a Category A or B infectious substance—the shipper must also be trained and competent in the requirements applying to that substance – we can help with that too.
Course format
There is no need for candidates to purchase the full IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations solely for use during the course. RoadSafe provides the necessary training materials and course hand-out.
On-site training for your organisation
We can deliver this course at your premises anywhere in the UK. Organisation-specific examples can be incorporated into the training so that candidates can relate the requirements to the products, packaging and shipping processes they encounter at work.
