Is your Pre-Acceptance Waste Audit Due?
Know what your practice produces before waste is collected
Ensure your healthcare waste is correctly classified, segregated, packaged and documented — while identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary clinical-waste treatment costs.
COMPLIANCE | RISK-REDUCTION | COST OPTIMISATION | DANGEROUS GOODS EXPERTISE
A pre-acceptance waste audit records the healthcare waste produced at your site and checks whether it is being separated, packaged and described appropriately. It gives your waste contractor or treatment facility information about the waste before collection, and helps your team spot problems such as incorrect segregation, unsuitable containers or unclear waste descriptions.
The audit is based on your actual activities and work areas. It can include a site walkthrough, review of waste records and procedures, and checks of representative waste containers where it is safe and appropriate to do so.
RoadSafe Europe provides independent, practical waste audits for veterinary practices, dental practices, GP surgeries, clinics, ambulance services, laboratories, care providers and hospitals. The audit is tailored to the size and activities of your site, with clear findings and recommended actions.

What happens during an audit?
An experienced dangerous-goods and waste-compliance professional physically examines what is actually happening on your premises.
We agree the scope with you, then review the relevant work areas and the waste they generate. Depending on your site, the audit may cover:
Our audits are structured around the requirements of HTM 07-01, the Environment Agency's healthcare-waste appropriate measures and WM3, with consideration of ADR requirements where applicable.
You’ll receive a written report describing the areas reviewed, the findings and recommended actions. Where requested, we can also discuss the findings with your team and help prioritise improvements.
Audit levels for different healthcare settings
Veterinary practices
For veterinary surgeries, clinics and animal hospitals. The audit can include consultation and treatment rooms, operating areas, laboratories, pharmacies and kennels or recovery areas where relevant.
It may review animal tissue, infectious waste, sharps, pharmaceutical waste, chemicals and general or offensive waste. The audit also considers the different waste streams produced by animal healthcare activities.
Dental practices
For single-chair surgeries through to multi-surgery dental practices and clinics. The audit can cover treatment rooms, decontamination areas, laboratories and other relevant work areas.
It may review sharps, pharmaceutical waste, infectious and offensive waste, dental amalgam and other chemical or healthcare waste streams.
GP surgeries and community clinics
For GP practices, health centres, treatment rooms and community clinics. The audit is scaled to your services and the number of work areas that produce healthcare waste.
It may review treatment and phlebotomy rooms, vaccine or medicine handling areas, minor surgery spaces and other relevant functions.
Hospitals and larger healthcare sites
For hospitals and larger, multi-department organisations. The audit can be planned by ward, department, building or agreed sampling approach, with the scope reflecting the site’s size and operational complexity.
It may include clinical wards, theatres, laboratories, pharmacies, dental services, mortuary areas, outpatient departments and facilities functions. We’ll agree how to represent the site and its waste streams before the audit begins.
Other healthcare and care settings
We can also discuss audits for laboratories, diagnostic centres, pharmacies, hospices and care providers. The appropriate scope depends on the services offered and the waste produced.
Choose the right level of audit
Single-site practice audit
A focused review for a small veterinary, dental or GP practice with a limited
number of waste-generating areas.
Multi-area or larger practice audit
For practices with several surgeries, treatment rooms, laboratories or other
distinct functions.
Hospital or multi-site audit
A planned audit for larger, more complex organisations. Scope, site sampling
and reporting are agreed in advance.
We’ll confirm the audit scope and provide a quotation based on the number of sites and departments, waste streams, sampling requirements and reporting needs.
What is the audit for?
A pre-acceptance audit helps create a representative record of a healthcare site’s waste streams for waste management and treatment arrangements. Environment Agency guidance for permitted healthcare waste facilities specifies the information such audit reports should contain, including the practice type, audit method, areas and processes covered, waste types by area, descriptions and classifications, packaging, and whether representative containers held the expected waste.
That does not mean every healthcare site has identical audit requirements. The need and scope can depend on the waste facility’s permit and procedures, the contractor’s requirements, the waste streams involved and the relevant jurisdiction. We’ll help clarify the scope before starting. Environment Agency guidance on healthcare waste pre-acceptance audits

More than a healthcare waste audit
RoadSafe Europe combines healthcare-waste compliance expertise with specialist knowledge of Dangerous Goods transport.
Where healthcare waste is also classified as dangerous goods, we can assess the relevant ADR requirements, including classification, packaging, marking, labelling and transport documentation.
