Driver CPC Periodic Training
RoadSafe Europe Limited are providers of Driver CPC Periodic Training courses, a legal requirement for most professional drivers since 2009.
The Driver CPC was introduced to improve the knowledge and skills of drivers, which in turn will:
- Improve road safety;
- Support the logistics industry by providing savings through more fuel efficient and defensive driving (and therefore also help the environment);
- Help with staff recruitment and retention;
- Raise the profile of the driving profession through maintaining skills levels, improving career opportunities and enhancing the image of drivers as 'professionals';
- Reduce vehicle wear and tear.
New drivers acquiring an LGV entitlement (C1, C1+E, C or C+E license) have to obtain an initial CPC as part of that license (RoadSafe are currently not intending to offer these initial courses).
Please also note that the Driver CPC is a different qualification, and has no connection to the CPC qualification required for Operators' Licence compliance. If you hold an Operators' CPC, you will still require the Driver CPC. Also, If you drive both LGV and PSVs, you only need to complete a single set of CPC training hours every 5 years (i.e. you do not require two CPCs).
We hold open courses at our Southampton training centre, and would be pleased to arrange extra dates for individual companies who wish to train groups of drivers, either in our fully equipped classroom (for a maximum of twenty trainees), or nationwide at their own premises, if suitable facilities exist, with no restriction on class sizes.

We make our courses interactive and fun, using individual candidate digital handsets, enabling them to interact with questions and quizzes posed by the trainer, either individually or in teams, to ensure the maximum level of retention and the involvement of all the attendees. CPC Training Requirements
When to take your Driver CPC periodic training
The aim of Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) periodic training is to provide continuing professional development for bus, coach and lorry drivers. This should last throughout your career, regardless of how often you drive.
Periodic training is delivered through courses that you attend over the five-year period for which your current Driver CPC is valid. There is no pass or fail element, and there is no requirement for tests or examinations.
You should allow enough time to complete your training within the five-year period - there is certain to be a mad rush again in 2024, and not enough courses may be available. There is no advantage in delaying your periodic training. The sooner you do it, the sooner your knowledge and skills will be refreshed and updated, benefiting both you, and your employer, by improving your standards of driving and professionalism.
Each new five-year period will begin from the expiry date of your current Driver CPC qualification, and not from the date on which you reached the 35 hours minimum training requirement.
If you hold a vocational licence for buses and coaches as well as lorries, you only need to do one set of periodic training.
How do I prove I hold a Driver CPC?
You will be able to prove you hold Driver CPC by a Driver Qualification Card (DQC). The card will be issued on successfully passing the initial qualification. Drivers with acquired rights (holding a GB photo card licence and an existing Driver CPC DQC) will be issued a new card on completion of the 35th hour of periodic training.
As the card will be sent to the address on your driving licence it is important that you keep your details up to date with DVLA.
Penalties for non-compliance

Driver CPC periodic training syllabus for LGV drivers
This section describes the subjects covered in each of the three parts of the Driver CPC periodic training syllabus.

Part 1: Advanced training
- Know the characteristics of the transmission system to make best possible use of it.
- Know the technical characteristics and operation of the vehicle's safety controls to minimise wear and tear and prevent malfunctioning.
- Ability to optimise fuel consumption.
- Ability to load the vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use.
Part 2: Application of regulations
- Know the social environment of road transport and the rules that govern it.
- Know the regulations for the carriage of goods.
Part 3: Health, road and environmental safety, service and logistics
- Be aware of the risks of the road and accidents at work.
- Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking of illegal immigrants.
- Ability to prevent physical risks.
- Awareness of the importance of physical and mental abilities.
- Ability to assess emergency situation.
- Adopting behaviour to help enhance the image of the company.
- Know the economic environment of road haulage and the organisation of the market.
Courses Available & Dates
Open courses will be held at our Southampton training centre, or on your own premises, nationwide. We usually host open courses on Saturday's to minimise disruption to the working week. However, if this isn't convenient, or you would like a different subject to be presented on a given day, just let us know.
All trainees completing a Driver CPC course will be issued with a certificate showing the hours they are entitled to claim toward their required qualification.
We have designed our courses to be modular, allowing great flexibility in the subjects to be covered. Essentially, any two 3.5 hour courses can be combined into a single 7 hour course, though some courses such as emergency actions and first aid, or drivers' hours and use of digital tachographs do naturally compliment each other.
